Career Day Presentation with Dr. Patel

Students were very excited to welcome a visitor into our classroom on Thursday.  Dr. Patel, a pediatric cranio-facial surgeon, came to speak to our students about his career.

The students and I were equally intrigued with the topic of cranio-facial surgery.  The presentation was so interesting!

We learned that Dr. Patel performs surgeries to correct facial and skull abnormalities.  He talked to the children about using a lot of math, science, and art in his work.  He has to create an anatomical sketch before performing a surgery.  You can tell that Dr. Patel is a very caring doctor in the way that he talked about helping his patients.

Here is Dr. Patel, and his wife, Mrs. Patel.  Mrs. Patel also works with patients!  She is a nurse.

We really enjoyed our learning with Dr. Patel, and we were glad to hear that he really enjoyed it too!

Thank you, Dr. and Mrs. Patel for visiting with us and sharing your expertise!

Measurement Mania

Students in 1S have been hard at work during our measurement unit.   Students are learning to identify the longest side of an object.  They are developing the understanding that measurements should be the same when they are measured twice or by different people using the same unit.

Students are developing accurate measuring techniques:
edge to edge, no spaces in between, or overlapping.

Students are learning to describe measurements that are in between whole numbers.

Students also completed a measurement lesson with Mrs. Brown.  First they estimated lengths.  Then they measured using different sized units.

Measurement is a fun, hands-on unit!

1S Winter Science Party

Two parents came together to plan and create a Winter Mad Science Party with homemade science experiments!  It was so cool.  With the help of many other parent volunteers, it was an awesome success!  The students loved it.  Click the slideshow to see highlights of the party!

Integrating Art with Social Studies and Science

1S recently integrated art in their learning for both Science and Social Studies.
“When you engage hands-on and you are creating your own learning, you are deepening your level of understanding about a particular topic."
 Judy Klima Arts Integration Coach
This can include the visual arts, performing arts, or musical art.

Students also integrated the arts with a STEM lesson with
Technology Integration Coach, Mrs. Brown.
